Description: The photograph shows a fisherman by the sea, at the shore of Niteroi, Brazil. The scene reminds the artist of the painting “The Monk by the Sea” from Caspar David Friedrich. The fisherman, like the monk, is facing the troubled sea and the immense sky, a vast scene of nature, that is almost apocalyptical. In relation to his surroundings, he is portrayed so small, that he conveys an enormous feeling of loneliness. In its tiny size, he becomes aware of the insignificance of the individual. The man stands in front of the face of the world and yet he is so distant from it.

Henriette is a photographer from Berlin. Her first encounter with photography came through assisting Lovis Dengler while interning at the Water Mill Center, an interdisciplinary Art Center founded by Robert Wilson. Later on, the Berlin-based photographer Ramtin Zanjani introduced her to analog photography and she has been practicing ever since.
